But God, Wouldn't I Be More Useful to You If I Were Healthy? (Chronic Pain and the Christian Life) Reviews
This is a soulful reflection of chronic pain through the eyes of a woman seeking godly answers. If you have been diagnosed with a chronic illness or mental illness and feel you have lost your purpose and value, I urge you to read But God wouldn't I be more useful to you if I were healthy? as it will help you examine what in your own life has true purpose and meaning beneath status and career titles. I felt as though I was reading Esther Smith's personal prayer journal, as she pours out her heart, and sites scripture in each chapter. She wasn't preachy however, so I felt comfortable passing along her book to my friends who are non-believers or of different faiths. I believe anyone suffering from a physical or mental illness will feel more confident to forge the uncertain path ahead.
I loved this powerful, hopeful book. The author's honesty about her journey including the darker moments of questioning and doubt, was validating and inspiring. I especially appreciated the reflection questions. It was like they were written just for me :) They were exactly what I needed!!! The author guides us in meaningful, compassionate self examination, helping us move beyond our sense of helplessness bringing closer to our true purpose. As a person who suffers with chronic pain and chronic illness, this book was a life changer but it is value is not limited to only those of us with chronic pain and illness. This book is for anyone who has ever felt like they are lost, anyone whose life seemed be to going in one direction but was suddenly detoured leaving them feeling disoriented and confused. This would be a great book to use with a friend, support group or a study group! I hope that Esther Smith will continue to share her writings! Her message is a blessing that so many need to hear!!
What a great book! Easy to read and packed full of Aha! Moments! Anyone who is struggling with finding their purpose during a season of chronic illness or pain needs to read this - I saw myself on every page - I was challenged to stop looking back at what was, and begin looking at how my God-given gifts and abilities can be used in service to Him now. He created us for a purpose - no matter our physical state, He is more than able to use us if we are willing.
What an immense understanding of grace she has. I am not even Christian. I wouldn't go so far as to claim Buddhism but I try to keep an open and compassionate mind set. This was a wonderful little book. As a person who suffers with chronic pain I often return to this book to help lift me up through the difficult moments. It was the perfect book to give my mom who is Christian to help her understand my situation.
This book is just the encouragement those of us in chronic pain need to help us see that there is hope beyond the disillusionment, that the Lord Jesus knows exactly what He is doing, and that serving in a way that pleases our God can look very different than what we’ve imagined. Buy this book and give it to everyone you know who has had chronic pain (physical or emotional) ravage their lives, making them think they’ll never be able to effectively be of use in the Kingdom of God any longer...those who have been side-lined by their own depression or by others who don’t understand that chronic pain does not equal being put out to pasture. The Lord is so kind to give this author the heart she has and the willingness to share her journey, thus encouraging the rest of us who too easily allow the pain to overshadow our potential. God bless her for writing it!
I am so very grateful that I came across this book, as since being diagnosed with a chronic illness, I have felt my life getting smaller and smaller by necessity. I have felt anger and guilt and self-pity, and like Job, I have asked God "why me?". But this book really gave me a different view, that by resting when I am I'll, I have an opportunity to pray and to rest in the presence of Christ, which is a beautiful way for me to use that time. And that I can think more creatively about my gifts and talents, to pick one thing, and find a way that I can serve and glorify HIM. I needed tnis book.
What an inspiring and well written book! So much that I can relate to, so much of my own experience, but one can never get enough of other’s experiences, perspective and wisdom (I don’t think so anyway). I look forward to reading more from this inspiring author 😊
A very inspiring book . I'm not as limited by pain as I thought now that I have read her stories and I have hope for the future and what God has for me . I received this book for free and I'm freely giving an honest review .
